The town was founded by General James Fenton on November 12, 1819, after he and his army captured Fort Fenton from a Cherokee Indian tribe. The town grew rapidly, and by 1830 had a population of 10,000 people. In 1868 Cordele became the site of the first free school in Alabama. The city was named for General Robert E. Lee during the American Civil War because it lay near where General Lee's headquarters were located at Cedar Mountain in far north Georgia. The city also housed Confederate forces during that war. After the war Cordele slowly recovered and became an important industrial center with a large textile industry until World War II when its economy collapsed due to bombing raids from Japan. Today Cordele is home to a small shopping mall and some small businesses but retains much of its historical charm including several hotels which have been preserved as part of the Gwinnett History Museum complex on downtown streets since 1906.

It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first town in what is now Cordele was founded in 1827 by nine men under the name of Springville. A post office called Springville was established in 1829, and became a town in 1832. The name change to Cordele in 1853 when land adjoining the town were donated by General Hugh Lawson Cordele and his wife Julia Ann Hargrave Richardson. The development of corduroys began around this time as farmers found it easier to keep their horses on these heavy roads than they could to cart manure or wheat away from their farms on foot or horseback. By 1860, corduroys accounted for over 60% of all vehicle sales statewide. However, until World War II there was little industry here; instead businessmen developed agricultural products such as cotton and soybeans which thrived during that time period due to high demand from military bases throughout Georgia and overseas. In 1945, World War II veteran Arthur "Buzz" Davenport opened Davenport Tire & Rubber Company with two partners—Frank Wessel and John Sibley—in what would become one ofAtlanta's most successful businesses ever before its closure in 2006 after 117 years among other successes including being named one of Forbes' "50 Fastest Growing Companies." CORDELE BANKERS INC., an international bank based out OFFLINE since 1978 has been headquartered here with more than $1B assets under management globally...Today’s downtown core still reflects much about that early history with brick sidewalks built starting around 1830s; hand-carved door handles dating back to 1850s are still common finds!
