Cordele was founded in 1838 by George Washington Cordele as a post office and trade center on the Chattahoochee River south of Athens. In 1907 it became an incorporated municipality. The population grew to 2,811 in 2000 and 3,569 at the 2010 census. The downtown core is a mix of Late Victorian and Colonial Revival architecture with several restaurants and shops including Poppy's Coffee House and Bistro de France. There are also two parks in town - Cordele Park off US 11 east of downtown and Stonewall Jackson Park on Court Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue. There are several churches in town: First Baptist Church (founded in 1839), Second Baptist Church (founded in 1865), Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1886), Presbyterian Church (established 1901), African American United Methodist Churches (AUMC; founded 1955) It has been reported that there are also some Unitarian Universalist congregations active here as well as Jehovah's Witnesses, Hindus, Buddhists, Mormons, Baptists from other denominations as well as atheists/agnostics!

Cordele is a town in Tift County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Macon–Gadsden Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cordele was founded by settlers from what is now Alabama in 1806 as the Town of Gadsdenville. A post office was established in 1807 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1906. The first store opened in Cordele on December 12, 1808, and the first school was built in October of that year. By 1830, there were six stores and twenty-six residents living in Cordele. In 1840, a mill had been built to power the local sawmill and seven other businesses grew up around it including grocery stores, brush shops, blacksmiths and tailors. In 1861 during the American Civil War Confederate General Robert E Lee's army invaded Tift County looking for supplies while General Joseph Wheeler's Union Army held off attack throughout most of its duration outside of Cordele limits; however upon learning about this headway Confederate forces converged on cordele from all directions resulting in heavy losses for both armies with over one hundred killed compared to only thirteen Union dead (including four officers). Aftermath led to military withdrawal for some time before being re-established within Confederate lines less than two weeks later when General Robert E Lee himself made an appearance at Gadsdenville after retreating some three thousand miles across country due to lack of food and logistical support; no casualties were sustained as a result though during his absence much property damage occurred along with skirmishes between Confederates and their opponents near Gadsendale where large numbers of civilians were also massacred without any guarantee they would be defended) The small town continued to grow through many waves of immigrants until development stopped abruptly around 1930 when electricity became available statewide which caused many businesses closed down overnight or converted into residences leaving little opportunity for business growth or evolution beyond subsistence level given current economic conditions although some small businesses still operate today such as a used bookstore which reopened after being closed for several years In recent decades Cordelle has experienced significant revival with new construction projects taking place such as a new high school (opened Spring 2019), mixed use development called "The Commons" adjacent to county courthouse complex (opened Fall 2018), restoration/replacement/upgrade work on municipally owned water filtration plant complete (opened Summer 2017), expansion project on original post office building underway (announced Fall 2018) along with numerous smaller projects that have brought life back into faded neighborhoods throughout town including "Cordelle Park" which contains baseball diamonds & soccer fields as well as community garden & library tucked away behind strip mall next door
