When the American Civil War began, cordele was one of the most important U.S. cities in support of the Union side. The Cordele Ammunition Depot was one of six such depots established along the Confederate line to supply weapons and ammunition to troops on both sides. It operated until 1865, when it closed due to lack of supplies and a decrease in funding for the war effort. The depot was located at 12th Street and Broadway in Cordele, just east of downtown. The facility had an annual production capacity of 5 million rounds of ammunition, which made it one of the largest manufacturing plants in Georgia during the war. Some 7,000 workers were employed at the depot during its existence, making it one of the largest employer concentrations in southeastern United States. Ammunition production played an important role in determining how successful Confederate forces were during the war; without quality ammunition, they would have been unable to fight effectively against overwhelming numbers and firepower from Union troops. In addition to providing essential materiel for soldiers on both sides, ammo production also helped contribute to General Robert E. Lee’s strategic goals as he defended Richmond against repeated Union assaults throughout Virginia. Afterthe Civil War ended, Cordele Ammo Depot continued operate under different name but ceased operations shortly afterwards because no new federal or state funding could be found for military spending following Reconstructionclosure ceremonies that took place across America after Victory over Lincoln’s armies in 1865-66

The community now known as Cordele was first settled by African Americans in 1892 when they moved from Decatur, Alabama. The name "Cordele" comes from an old Creek Indian word meaning "place where white people cannot go." In 1907, two brothers by the name of Wofford bought 1,000 acres of land along U.S. Highway 84 south of present-day Cordele and began to build a house for themselves and their families. They named their new home "Wofford's Grove". In 1923, Wofford's Grove was sold to Cloudcroft Southeastern Railroad Company for $1 million dollars ($102 million current value). Cloudcroft became one of the few railroad companies ever to own both a mill and a major town center like Cordele did at that time. In 1928, Donnell Coxe purchased 2,500 acres west of Cordele from Cloudcroft for $10 million dollars ($2 billion current value). The land included parts of what are now Lithonia and Roswell Heights neighborhoods on the north side OF DeKalb County while also including much of today's Cordelle neighborhood on the south side OF Clayton County

The first permanent settler in what would become Cordele was James Witherspoon, who arrived in 1793. Witherspoon built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it “Witherspoon’s Cabin” after his father-in-law, John Witherspoon. In 1802, George Washington cordially invited James Witherspoon to become one of his trustees for education in Georgia; Witherspoon accepted and soon founded a school there which he called “Wetherspoons Academy”. In 1806, Andrew Johnson became President of the United States and ordered General William Troup to march into Gwinnett County to quash any slave uprisings starting from Decatur (which were already under control of General David Johnston). Troup reached Cordele on January 6th with about 2,000 men but found no evidence that slaves had taken over any white homes or businesses. He instead discovered that many slaves were working their own farmssteads near by hand tools and some had even built barns and outbuildings themselves! After further investigation he allowed all slaves within his commands to be freed – an event which Event historians have dubbed “The Great Civil War Amnesty” – as this was seen as necessary for national security reasons at that time In 1865 when Confederate General Alexander Stephens moved south from Montgomery Alabama with 1,500 troops towards Savannah Georgia they met resistance at Dahlonega where Stephens headquarters were located along with other key strategic points such as Fort McAllister guarding against possible Federal landing by way of the Chattahoochee River What followed are documented events including: artillery bombardment; 4 days battle; total loss for both sides including high losses among civilians; plus large numbers dead or wounded soldiers from both armies In 1865 after Confederate General Alexander Stephens moved south from Montgomery Alabama with 1,500 troops towards Savannah Georgia they met resistance at Dahlonega where Stephens headquarters were located along with other key strategic points such as Fort McAllister guarding against possible Federal landing by way of the Chattahoochee River What followed are documented events including: artillery bombardment; 4 days battle; total loss for both sides including high losses among civilians; plus large numbers dead or wounded soldiers from both armies In addition to its military significance during The Great Civil War Amnesty also played an important role in developing much later aspects of Cordele town center such as its architecture which reflects classic antebellum Southern design principles like asymmetrical shape/angles walls vaults wide entrances topped by tall Ionic columns while kept free from undue ornamentation
