Conyers is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 5,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Conyers is located on the eastern edge of metro Atlanta and is bordered by Roswell to the southwest, Johns Creek to the northwest, Sandy Springs to the northeast, and Decatur to the east. According to Forbes magazine's 2011 list of America's most billionaires,[1] Conyers has $290 million worth of assets as well as 10% ownership stakes in several major companies including Coca-Cola (KO) and Delta Air Lines (DAL). The community was founded in 1868 by white settlers who arrived from Alabama. The name "Conyers" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where there are trees." In 1897, developer Charles Cone built what would become Copan Hall which housed a high school and two churches until it burned down in 1951. The first store opened in 1892 with local grocer W.G. Payne selling goods such as milk, cigars, tobacco and eggs from his home on Glenwood Avenue across from today's courthouse square. In 1906 Conyers annexed rural areas of Roswell Township south of Interstate 20; this annexation led to increased development around Copan Hall as people began commuting intoAtlanta for work or study nearby.[2] In 1928 Conyers became an incorporated municipality with aDemocrat-led government after voters approved amendments defining its boundaries through referendum results[3][4]. A decade later following annexations by Sandy Springs and Johns Creek township voted Republican guided by JB Hickey until his death in office in 1966 when all three municipalities merged into one under new Mayor James Gadsden.[5][6] As a result of incorporation all citizens were given voting rights regardless of whether they resided within municipal boundaries or not[7]. Today conyers' diverse demographics include nearly 60% African American making it one of America's most diverse communities[8][9], 25% Hispanic[10], 15% Asian Pacific Islander (API), 4% Native American/Alaska Natives (NAANs), 3% European Americans (EAEAs), 2% Italian Americans,[11][12] 1% Jewish Americans,[13][14] and 1% Orthodox Jews.[15][16].

Conyers is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first people to live in what would become Conyers were Creekshott and Muscogee Indian natives who settled there around 1795. The first white person to arrive was John Conyers, who came with his family from Worcester, Massachusetts in 1817. He purchased land east of downtown Conyers from the Creek Nation and started a cotton plantation which he named "Conyers Plantation". In 1835, John's son James bought the plantation and continued to run it until his death in 1881. His wife Sarah also ran it for many years before dying in 1937. Their three daughters did most of the running of the plantation until their husbands died; one sister became Mrs. George Hill (1899-1976), another sister married Rev. Drs. Ira Hixon (1907-1994) and Jr., III (1945-2006) ran it for about 20 years until its sale to developers in 1984 In 1886, two brothers by the name of Gaines opened a store called Gaines & Company on Pryor Street near Airport Road which became one of the leading stores in Conyers In 1904, Mr. Waddell built a sawmill on Millstream Creek which together with other mills helped create an early cotton industry within Conyers In 1922 when Atlanta founded its city limits, much of what now makes up Conyers including parts of Pryor Street and Airport Road was annexed intoAtlanta After World War II much development took place with new housing being built along Pryor Street as well as Airport Road creating more than just an agricultural community but also becoming known as "the Strip" . However today most people are still affiliated with agriculture or have some connection to farming
Conyers was founded in 1835 by James Conyers and his wife. In 1850, it became a town. In 1871, it became a city.
