On December 15, 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army came within sight of Atlanta while marching through central Georgia; before he could enter into battleAtlanta surrendered on December 16th with General Wheeler leading the surrender parade through downtown Conyers followed by Ewell himself who said "I have fought our battles and I know how to die" to cheers from his troops
