They named their settlement "Conyers" after General Washington's ancestral home on Long Island (now Brooklyn). After several weeks they arrived at the mouth of the Chickasaw Fork of the Ocmulgee River where they established a fortification which they called Fort George (now known as Interstate 85 southbound near mile marker 408). The colonists were met with hostility by local Native Americans who thought them invaders; but eventually they were successful in converting most of these hostilities into friendly relations over time. A post office was established at Conyers in 1834; it remained active until 1861 when it became part of Athens–Milton postal district. In 1840s cotton farming became dominant among Georgians; however slave labor continued to be used up until 1865 when freed slaves began coming here from Alabama and Mississippi for work on railroads and plantations throughout central Georgia After Union army Gen Ulysses S Grant destroyed Confederate armies at Missionary Ridge outside Chattanooga on April 9th 1865 little remained standing except for some piles of cannonballs including one that still stands today just north side I-85 exit off ramp goin towards Dunwoody Rd., within view from US Capitol Building across Broad Street
