In 1840, when slavery ended throughout most central Georgia, many freedmen moved to this area where cotton could be grown more easily than anywhere else on account of its high quality and lack of competition from other crops such as corn or rice. By 1850 approximately 60%of all blacks living in Cobb County resided within five miles (8 km) of Athens; over 50% lived within 10 miles (16 km) of Decatur; more than 60% lived within 15 miles (24 km) of Marietta; and over 80% lived within 20 miles (32 km) of Savannah. This concentration led to development near Athens because transportation was limited elsewhere in central Georgia at that time: goods had to be carted around or taken Ferryboat across Lake Union or downriver to Macon then transported by wagon train back upriver again before reaching Athens proper
