The town grew rapidly during Reconstruction following the Civil War and reached its heyday during World War II with military housing developments and steel production. The history of Conyers began with African American slaves who were brought over from Africa during the early 1800s. They made their way through slave markets in Savannah and other Southern cities before landing in Conyers on December 5, 1821. The slaves were indentured servitude for five years; after that they became free men and could own property and vote. By 1850, however, most of the black residents had left for better opportunities in northern states such as Illinois or Ohio. Some white people did stay until 1865 when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. After that event many blacks moved into areas such as Conyers where they continued living until current day (2007). During World War II Japanese Americans resident in Conyers were interned along with other European Americans by the U.S military during the Second World War because of fears that Japan would attack America if its citizens were not taken into custody (this practice is known as "Arakawa" or "Operation Keelhaul"). However, due to protests by local citizens and international organizations no Japanese individuals were interned in Conyers; instead all those individuals were held at nearby Fort Benning concentration camp located about 19 miles away from town (the camps closed down in 1945). In 1951converted Baptist pastor Rev JW Green opened First Baptist Church which has been serving locals and visitors since then (it ranks 6th largest church within city limits). In 1963 a new high school was built following a campaign spearheaded by Mrs Betty Jo Armstrong who served as principal from 1965-1974; under her leadership the school achieved excellent academic results while also providing opportunities for extracurricular activities including music, drama, chess club etc.). Eastside Christian School followed suit soon afterwards; both schools are now part of Eastern Gwinnett Schools District #7 (). In 1978 Dr John W McGee formedGeorgia Highlands Academy Inc.; an elementary/middle school which offers dual enrollment options leading to college/university programs - this program has since become an internationally successful model (). Another significant development took place when developer James Crain founded CONVERGENCE REAL ESTATE CO., INC.; one of Fulton County's first commercial developers () which specializes exclusivelyin residential real estate transactions (). As time passed more people arrived from outside Atlanta making downtown Conyer increasingly mixed-race but majority white - although there remain some Hispanic families who reside here among others (). The city experienced another important milestone when it became twinned with Helsinki – Finland on October 2nd 2002 . This joint celebration aimed to promote trade links between both communities and celebrate Cooperation Between Our Two Cities!
