Conyers is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 17,832 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The first European settlement in Conyers dates back to 1802 when Captain James Conyers and his family founded a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. In 1821, John Fenton established a small plantation near what is now downtown Conyers. The town's first school was built in 1824 and its first store in 1830. In 1836, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his cavalry Camp from Fort Gaines to what is now downtown Conyers as part of his campaign against cotton growing interests in the Southeast region of the United States. A year later, he renamed the town "Fulton" after himself for its new location and impact on commerce within Georgia's expanding cotton belt. In 1860, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army into central Georgia to cut off supplies reaching Union forces besieging Atlanta. He ordered Major General William Troup to march towards Atlanta from Dalton with 3 infantry brigades (the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment under Colonel John Coker), 2 artillery batteries (1s Maine Artillery Regiment), 150 men of Company G (of 5th US Colored Infantry Regiment) and 3 teams of mules carrying food that had been delivered by wagonloads overland from Corinth via Athens and other points east of our state line into Georgia; these supplies were essential for sustaining Confederate troops during their siege-and-occupation campaign against Atlanta - an event which ultimately ended with Union victory on April 4, 1865 effective as a result of Union strategic planning better than Confederate objectives! From this initial effort forward by one man - Lieutenant Colonel Troup - things quickly grew more complex as additional brigades were called up including detachments from Virginia (1st Brigade under Brigadier General Thomas Jarratt), Arkansas (2nd Brigade under Brigadier General Nathaniel Banks) New York (3rd Brigade under MajorGeneral David Twelfth Corps) and Texas (4th Brigade under MajorGeneral George Buell). Although little notice was given outside ofGeorgia at that time concerning this large scale mobilization for wartime duty - barely six weeks elapsed between Colonel Coker's arrival early July 1861 prior to Battle Of Bull Run until word arrived through dispatches just before battle that Atlanta had fallen resulting in many casualties among civilians not directly involved; it would be months before we knew exactly how many people died throughout all three armies involved! On November 12th 1862 during voting day for local officers election results following Reconstruction Convention held at Decatur Hotel – Alexander Hogg being elected Mayor over incumbent Wm Goode – violence occurred between opponents attending meeting who threw stones & bottles at each other thence resulting in two men being arrested & charged with disorderly conduct; mayor’s term expired December 15th & Goode took office January 1st 1863
