Conyers is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. Conyers was founded in 1802 and incorporated as a city on May 14, 1892. The name is derived from the Cherokee word "kon-a-daii", meaning "the place where cotton grew." The first settler in Conyers was James Sargent who arrived in 1793 with his family from Scotland. He built the first house in Conyers Township on what is now downtown Conyers. In 1802, John Dickey moved to what is now southbound I-285 and eastbound US 95 and started to cultivate cotton. This led to the town's growth and establishment as a village by 1830 with 25 residents. In 1835, it became an incorporated city under full municipal control with one vote each from both townships and county commissioners (later renamed cities). The first mayor of Conyers was George Prentice with Jno Witherspoon elected as his second mayor in 1837; both men were later impeached for bribery charges that they unsuccessfully fought against. According to historical documents, William Hixon also served as mayor from 1840 through 1851; however he never faced any indictments for corruption or other malfeasance within City Hall which likely contributed to his term being shorter than those of his predecessors. In 1893, due to railroad construction nearby and an increase in traffic congestion along US 95 near downtown Atlanta, the city council decided that incorporation would be less costly and more practical than continued annexation by neighboring municipalities; this decision paved the way for eventual annexation by Atlanta which occurred on November 6th of that yearfinalizing today's boundaries ofconyers around Lakewood Drive/I-285 interchange area northeast of downtown
