Conyers is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 8,828 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Cobb Chain of Lakes and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Conyers is one of two cities in Fulton County that are both considered "inner-ring" communities, meaning they lie within their own ZIP codes but are connected by arterial roads and highways to other parts of the metropolitan area. The other City is Roswell. The first settlers in what would become Conyers were farmers who came from western Georgia in 1819. In 1832, General George Washington Carver donated land to build a town on the banks of the Chattahoochee River for military veterans and their families who had served in the American Civil War. In 1904, Conyers voters passed a proposition to incorporate as a city with a population of 25,000 people; this proved successful and the city grew rapidly under Mayor John Aiken's leadership from 10,000 residents in 1920 to 50,000 residents by 1930. The city's growth continued during World War II as industries such as munitions production increased demand for slave labor in aircraft manufacturing plants throughout America; accordingly, African Americans made up over 60% of Conyers' population by 1945 compared to only about 20% nationally at that time. president Harry Truman referred to Conyers as "the most Negroized city you ever saw." After World War II ended however there were declines in industry and jobs which led to mass flight of white employees into suburbs while blacks suffered job losses and low incomes; this combination caused rapid gentrification (largely through annexation) until crime rates began rising again among black neighborhoods beginning around 1990s due chiefly to high levels of poverty and unemployment – now termed " concentrated block policing ". As more poor whites moved into inner-ringe neighborhoods they also brought with them gangs which exploded several times resulting in shootings incidents across many blocks including one instance where gunfire ripped through an intersection leaving three people dead before police could arrive.– according To SPIKE Magazine
