Conyers is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 20,747 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. Conyers is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America. The area that now makes up Conyers was first settled by Creek Indians and was called "Manteso" meaning "place where there are many huckleberries." In 1795, General James Wilkinson founded a small town on the site of present day Conyers and named it after his friend and mentor, Sir George Washington. Wilkinson's town prospered until 1820 when cotton farming became prevalent in the area and commerce moved from Conyers to Augusta or Atlanta. In 1821 an act was passed by Congress providing for the organization of counties in Georgia; this Act created DeKalb County (later Cobb County) with its nucleus located around what are now Roswell, Marietta and part of Enterprise; all within what would become Fulton County. On December 3, 1822 William Hogg purchased land south of downtown from John Brown for $8 per acre ($ in current currency). This tract would provide much needed farmland for development eventually becoming known as Hogg's Hill or Oldecontee Boulevard today. In 1840 Charles Stewart bought 450 acres (18 km²) of land east of downtown from John Pemberton for $10 per acre ($1=$5), which would form part of what is now Midtown Atlanta today. Stewart had asked Pemberton to sell him more land so he could build a home prototypes on his property – later renamed Constitution Avenue – that still stand today as one of Atlanta's most iconic landmarks. He also developed Whatley Plantation near Kennesaw Mountain Road which still stands today as one of the most significant plantations in north-central Georgia history having produced over 1 million pounds (500 thousand kg)of cotton between 1800-1900 alone! In 1842–43 a group led by David Dandridge built Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church on Second Street between Spring Streets and Decatur Streets just east of Interstate 75/National Highway System exit 174A – this church remains visible today from both Spring Street NW and I-75/Highway No 83B Exit 5A (the old I-85 interchange). The group also erected two other churches later: First Baptist Church at Locust Street SE corner with Patton Drive NE entering northwest suburban Atlanta about 1945; second Baptist Church located at Clairmont Avenue SW corner with Snelling Drive southeast suburb Atlanta about 1955 – both remaining extant to this day! Reverend Drury Lane Cemetery can be found just off SR 256/I-75 exit 164 North towards Alpharetta opposite Kenedy golf course this cemetery contains burials dating back to c1800 plus several important military families including members Generals Sherman & Johnston
