Columbus, Georgia is a small town located in Pike County, Georgia. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. Columbus has been named for Christopher Columbus and his exploration of the New World. The city was founded in 1820 by General James Wilkinson and local citizens. It grew rapidly during the 19th century as cotton mills and other businesses developed around it. The city was incorporated as a municipality in 1892. Columbus experienced significant growth during World War II as the war effort brought many jobs to the area. After the war, the town became more suburban with some of its original downtown buildings demolished to make way for new development. In addition, Columbus has been celebrated annually by Georgians since 1493 when a service was held at Point Candler Church in downtown Savannah honoring him along with Spanish explorers like Juan Ponce de León who had explored these same waters less than two years earlier!
