Columbus is a town in Carroll County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,172 at the 2010 census. It was named for Christopher Columbus, who discovered America in 1492. The town is located on the Chattahoochee River and between Decatur and Alpharetta. A post office was established in 1827 in Columbus by Colonel John Fenton. It was renamed Decatur in 1837 after the capital of Alabama, which had been moved to Decatur from Mobile Bay after the Battle of Mobile Bay on July 8, 1813. The first settler in Columbus was Philadelphia merchant George Diffenbaugh, who bought land near what is now downtown with other investors on November 3, 1830. Diffenbaugh's purchases were part of a large area that became known as "The City of Tomorrow." Columbus experienced rapid growth during the antebellum period because it lay within reach of several major railroads and served as an important stop on both routes. In 1861-1862, Confederate forces burned down much of downtown; however, this only increased demand for goods and services available fromDecatur so Columbus grew even faster than before. By 1865 the city's population exceeded 2,000 people; however its growth slowed due to competition from Atlanta and its burgeoning metropolis around Interstate 85. By 1880 Columbus' population had reached 5,700 people; however again its growth slowed due to interstate competition and streetcar travel around Atlanta proper which greatly increased density along I-85 southward into Marion County - where Columbus would finally become incorporated as a municipality on December 15th that year by act of Congress under Ulysses S. Grant (who also founded Athens).
