The first gun ownership in Columbus was a shotgun owned by John Wesley Hardin. In 1839, the only rifle to be legally possessed in Columbus was a rifle belonging to Capt. Fenton Dickson of the Georgia Militia.
Columbus was founded in 1795 by Captain James Cook, and became an American colony in 1820. The city of Columbus is the county seat of Lawrence County. The capital of Georgia is Atlanta. Columbus has a population of over 200,000 people, making it the third-largest city in Georgia. The area that now includes Columbus was first settled by Native Americans, who called it Pembroke Shoals because of its location on the Pensacola River. In 1565, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto explored and named the area Santa Clara de la Florida after Saint Clare of Assisi. In 1795, Captain James Cook discovered what he thought to be a new continent when he sailed along the eastern coast of South America. After sailing for several weeks around Cape Horn, he returned to British soil with his discoveries on July 14, 1797. On November 11, 1797, George Washington issued a proclamation declaring independence from Great Britain; this event is celebrated as United States Independence Day. In 1802–1803 Governor John Pope sent Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Jarratt with a team of men to explore and map the Chattahoochee River Valley and their possible connection to the Mississippi River system. On January 6th 1804 they established Fort Moultrie at present-day Decatur Hill on Chickamauga Creek on land that had been claimed by both Spain and Britain as part of West Florida during the Spanish Empire period. On March 2nd 1805 General Thomas Pickens ordered General Phillip Schofield to take control of all Indian Territory west of Mobile Bay; this included most of modern day Georgia including Columbus proper and much adjacent territory including current day Lawrence County and parts of Cobb County and Volusia County today). John Ross became governor under General Pickens’ command on April 1st 1805 succeeding LtCol Andrew Jarratt who had died four days earlier at Etowah Hills near Chattanooga while exploring northwestern Alabama with Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Steedman (the first white settler in what would become known as Georgians) On October 12th 1811 Augustus Troup (a Cherokee) led a force against Ulysses S Grant’s forces at Battle Of Broken Bow which resulted in United States victory over Native American forces commanded by Chief Little Turtle Columbus saw its heyday during Jacksonian times when cotton cultivation began becoming prevalent due to slave labor brought over from Africa via ships docking there for shipment back home The town experienced significant anti-immigrant sentiment due mainly to African American slavery but also fear that Europeans could bring disease into what would become known as “the Black Belt” region where cotton farming still continued despite few white settlers being allowed into this part OF GA
