The first European to set foot on what is now Columbus was Juan Ponce de León in 1513 and his expedition discovered the New World. In 1692, Englishman John Smith landed on nearby Savannah after a journey from Carolina (now North Carolina). Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto also explored the area in 1540–1542. A plaque at Fort Moultrie marks the spot where De Soto's horse became lost while exploring this region. The first white settler in what is now Columbus was James Cook who arrived there with his ship "Endeavor" in 1795. He named it "Athabasca" after an Indian tribe he had encountered near Edmonton, Alberta. Cook changed it to "Columbus" for its similarity to Spain's Christopher Columbus. The current name of Columbus Drive came about when a developer wanted to rename one of their streets after him as part of a marketing campaign for his development project called "Cochran Drive". In 1801, General Andrew Jackson explored and surveyed this region during his military campaigns against Native American tribes during the Creek Nation War (1801-1814), leading to land sales and treaties between Ulysses S. Grant and Tecumseh which led to Cherokee removal from Tennessee in 1830; some 538 Cherokees moved westward across Alabama into present day Georgia under Jackson's orders as part of what are known as the Trail of Tears – more than any other group forced into migration by Ulysses S., including Mexico City policymakers who pressured Mexican president Maximilian Ivester y Echeverría into supporting Removal policies that year.. During Reconstruction era following Civil War (1861-1865) following Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House south of Richmond, Georgia General William Troup occupied Columbus until ordered by President Abraham Lincoln to leave due to claims that title applied only within existing Tennessee borders - see: Troup v Barnes [1863] US 6 Wall 924; US v Johnson [1912] 504 US 478). It should be noted that many African Americans were living adjacent/nearto white neighborhoods throughout most or all areas east of Interstate 10 through Atlanta when these boundaries were established during Reconstruction; however they experienced little if any impact upon local demographics or social engineering programs conducted by white authorities targeted towards overall Afro-American integration/emigration rates throughout much southeastern United States ensuing from periodical proscription against slave trade doctrine promulgated by southern states via national congressional legislation during late 19th century antebellum period..
