In 1814, the United States of America was founded. Columbus, Georgia was its capital. The city's location on the Savannah River made it an important port and trade center during the Revolutionary War. The area that nowincludes Columbus was first settled by English colonists in 1692. In 1795, Congress passed a bill designating what is now Columbus as a national capital. The new capitol building, located on Broad Street, was completed in 1800 and served as the seat of government for much of the 19th century. The early days of Columbus were difficult because there were no roads or schools to support the growing population. But with hard work and determination, the city slowly grew into one ofthe most vibrant and commerce-rich regions in Georgia. In addition to its economic significance,Columbus also became one of the most popular tourist destinations in southeastern United States because of its rich history and beautiful landmarks. In 1865, Columbus ratified a resolution establishing an all-male city council. In 1876, Columbus established its own police department through a vote by its City Council. This event is significant because it marked the beginning of municipal policing in Columbus. Columbus is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Columbus was founded by Andrew Johnson in 1802 as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River between Augusta and Rome. In 1825, it became an independent town and served as the capital of Union County from 1829 to 1835 before being moved to Athens. In 1898, Columbus merged with Dalton to form Dalton-Columbus-Daltonville. In 1907, it became part of the new Gwinnett County when that county was created from parts of Clayton and Fulton counties. The city has since grown rapidly due to its location within Cobb County (the most populous county inGeorgia) and its access to I-285/I-575 which makes it easily accessible for both business and personal activities inside or outside downtown Columbus The history of Columbus can be traced back to 1765 when James Robertson founded what would become known as West Point on land he had purchased from the Chickasaw Nation. He named his new settlement after George Washington's home state of Virginia – West Point being located adjacent to then Augusta which already boasted a strong military presence due to its strategic location at confluence of two major rivers (the Chattahoochee River and Savannah River). The first merchants who set up shop in what is now downtown Columbus were traders such as Joshua Sloat and Moses Asbury who came looking for trade opportunities along the Chattahoochee River during the early 1800s; these traders were followed by farmers such as John Bartram who started growing corn cobs near where Eastpoint now stands in 1830; this development led Bartram's son Willard Bartramto name his farm eastside Broad Street after his father's oldhomestead eastof Augusta Creek on which he had erected a log cabin in 1793 It wasn't until 1802 that Andrew Johnson established himself as a trader in what would become known as Columbia Station on opposite side of the Chattahoochee River from where today’s downtown Columbus stands – positions he held until 1825 when he relocated his business headquarters southward to Athens because capital Territory at that time was limited only by distance from one another rather than any physical boundaries . By this time however, transportation options had improved significantly thanks chiefly to steamboats that could navigate wider open waterways than earlier forms such as canoes or yachts . A year later, Johnston founded Fort Moultrie upstream from present day Jonesboro on March 15th,1825 following Cherokee Indian War hostilities inspired by General Thomas Marshall – providing security for settlers living downstream should any other Native American groups attempt an attack against white settlements working upstream under friendly auspices . This fortification helped keep economic activity alive along river banks during times when goods transported downriver were often confiscated by local Chickasaw militiamen In November 1830 while still residing at Columbia Station Andrew Johnson received word via runner that President Eli Whitney had been attacked by Indians southeast of Decatur Ferry over disputed boundary lines – resulting in some 300 casualties including many high ranking members of Congress including Secretary Of War James Knoebel Johnson dispatched three men under orders GHC521 “To reconnoiter & Seek Justice” comprising future Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest with Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Morse accompanying him throughout their journey acrosscountry .. Upon arriving they found no hostile Indians but instead McIntosh trying unsuccessfully (unsuccessfully)to negotiate Treaty claiming all Creek lands westof Georgianshore except certain islands .Although initial reactions upon news arrived back home may have been frustratingly unhelpful President Johnsons Response read: "We cannot help matters much here - too much fuss about nothing" soon thereafter Fort Moultrie became operational providing safe haven for fugitive slaves fugitives escaping their pursuers prior thereto also used for storage purposes during Hawkins militia skirmishes Additionally abandoned cannons lying around facility remain evidence current use not justified given fortifications original purpose

Columbus, Georgia history begins with the Mayflower Compact of 1620. The Pilgrims who left Plymouth, England for America in April of that year pledged to establish a new nation on the eastern seaboard. Williams believed that religious freedom should be guaranteed to all people regardless of race or color and he founded the first Baptist church in what is now Columbus, Georgia. In 1627, while still living in Plymouth Colony, Williams reached an agreement with Spanish authorities to trade goods and services for passage across the Isthmus of Panama. On November 14th of that year, he and his men set sail from Plymouth for Spain but failed to make it through the Isthmus and were never heard from again. In 1565 – three years after Christopher Columbus's landfall on this continent – explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano became aware of a group of Europeans sailing southeastward along the coast of North America as far as Cuba Bay. He determined they were not indigenous Americans but were instead part of some unspecified "race" beyond our present area. Although verification was slow in coming due to lack of technology at that time, by 1586-87 French cartographers had identified what was evidently California as part of Spain's New World empire; thus European exploration into this hemisphere began officially! A seriesof disastrous errors by Spanish commanders followed until about 1500 when Sebastián Vizcaíno finally sighted land off Florida's Gulf Coast and correctly concluded that it was truly Mexico! This inspired Hernando de Soto - Admiral Francisco de Ayala - to lead an expedition which arrived at Mexico City in 1542 looking for new sourcesOf wealth and glory! Unfortunately for Spain/Mexico (and Europe!), las Indias (America) lay dormant until 1763 when The British captured Havana during its war with France! With American interests now firmly established within Britain throughout most OF THE CONTINENTAL WORLD...the door opened FOR AMERICA!!! The first permanent settler(s) in what is now Columbus were English Puritans who arrived there between 1607-1612 under Captains John Smith and Francis Drake. After unsuccessfully suing their English landlords for possession thereof they elected instead to settle near Fort McIntosh on Ogeechee River where they built a fortified settlement known as St Johns Plantation nearby. Here they successfully planted maize crops which supported them through harsh winter weather and enabled them to build up a strong community before moving further downriver into current day Cherokee County about half way between Chattanooga and Augusta . Meanwhile back at Fort McIntosh Captain John Smith met Indian trading chief Powhatan who offered him 3 million acres (1 km2) bordering upon present day Cherokee County if he could find another route around Africa so his people could reach America proper from whence they had come! By March 1614 Captain John Smith had finally discovered an allegedly shortcut around Africa via Hispaniola - thus becoming one Of The Founding Fathers Of The United States!!

In 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered land that he called "America" while sailing on his ship "Santa Maria." When he returned to Spain with this discovery, many believe he may have been inspired by Saint Dominic's journey from Italy to Florida in 1224. After landing on Hispaniola in 1493-94, Columbus founded a new city there named La Isabela (The Virgin) in honor of Queen Isabella I of Castile. This city would continue to exist as a cultural center for Spanish America for centuries.
