After spending some time ashore at Ponce de Leon Island Columbus made his way back home and reported his findings back to Spain. This led to another round of negotiations and exploration which resulted in Blanca D'Ancona being sent with three ships to find a new route between Europe and Asia. In 1502 she arrived at Java but soon realized there was much easier access from Asia through India than through Java so returned home empty-handed. It wasn't until 1526 that another Portuguese explorer named Vasco da Gama finally discovered Indies were actually located off Africa's coast and thus opened up world trade with Asia providing new opportunities for Spanish settlers in America. In 1568 Dominican captain Alonso Enríquez de Sagrario founded Santiago de Cuba after finding sugarcane growing near Jamaica; this allowed Spanish colonists living in Florida (then part of Spain) access to both sugar cane and cheap slave labour which gave them impetus towards expanding into North America westward.
