In 1492, Christopher Columbus was discovered by a group of men who were sailing under the direction of the queen of Spain. The queen loved the idea of expanding Spanish territory and decided to support Columbus' journey to find new lands. She also wanted to show her people that she was an excellent leader, so she ordered some ships to be sent with supplies and men for his expedition. The first ship set sail on July 4th, 1492. After spending two weeks in search of a landfall, the crew sighted a large island off their course. They named it Hispaniola because they thought it resembled Spain's Holy Roman Empire (pictured). In order to prove that he had actually discovered land rather than trying to return home on false information, Columbus renamed the island Espanola after himself and his ships. Columbus quickly realized that he had stumbled upon something special when he landed on what is now Haiti. He built a small fortress in this location and began trading with the natives. He also started construction on another small fortress, which would eventually become known as Santo Domingo (shown). This decision marked one of the most important decisions made by Columbus during his life – he chose to move forward with his exploration instead of waiting for approval from Spanish government officials

On October 12th Columbus returned home with reports that there were other islands off the coast of Africa which he had incorrectly identified as Cuba. This news gave impetus to exploration and led eventually to settlement by Europeans in what is now Georgia
