This voyage marked perhapsthe last great European attempt at establishing permanent contact with new areas beyond Europe – a previous attempt by Marco Polo had failed disastrously just a few years earlier in 1500AD! Columbus’ landfall may have been accidental or motivated by pure chance: although he named both islands Islas del Rey (Island of the King) after his Sovereign King Ferdinand II Of Castile and Leon – ostensibly because neither island bore any physical resemblance whatsoever to either La Cruz or Santa María - there is no evidence that he actually sighted any such thing as Santa Maria nor even landed on either island! What we do know comes from oral accounts and various artefacts found ashore during his time here including items like coins minted under his patronage such as these very specimens now housed at Madrid’s Museo Nacional del Venezuela After reaching Jamaica on July 12th 1502/3 Spanish expeditions began investigations into nearby Cuba which had never been sighted by Europeans before…..such explorations led Alonso de Ojeda Fernandez who sailed southward along Havana Bay on October 9th 1504 sounding each bay bottom for 7 days before sighting land…he called this land “Islas Canarias”……….but there seemed little likelihood that anyone could find worthwhile resources living near this inhospitable place….so Ferdinand Magellan decided purchase these properties from Alonso De Ojeda Fernandez……………..on November 6teenth1504…………..Magellan sailed northwest towards Puerto Rico where he sighted land again…..this time landing on Mayaguez Island……….magazine account gives an idea about size & shape: "Andalusia looked like an immense piece of clothcovered with thorns; its surface was so smooth that one might have thought it was glass; its height above water [was] more than 20 m."
