It wasn't until after weeks of work and exploration that he realized there were several islands off this newly discovered territory – Santa Maria de la Hispaniola (Island of Santa Maria), Dominica (Dominican Republic), Cuba (Cuba), Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico), Hispaniola (Haiti) – which made up present-day Georgia. Christopher Columbus' landfall didn't mark the beginning of America's story however; rather it marked its ultimate success when Spanish settlers - led by Juan Ponce de León - landed on these islands less than two years later and began their own colonization process. Although initial efforts were difficult due to harsh weather conditions and Native resistance against European settlement, over time Spanish colonists slowly arrived with enough faith and goodwill towards the Native Americans to allow them self-government while they continued creating strong trading relationships with Europe. The following year, he explored present-day Puerto Rico which he named San Salvador de la Trinidad after Saint Lawrence who had suffered at the hands of the Caribs. A few months later he reached Cuba and began trading goods with its inhabitants as well as Spanish traders in Havana Harbor. In May 1503, while exploring Yucatán Peninsula on Hispaniola’s eastern coast, Columbus sighted another group of islands lying to the north called Islas Filipinas or “The Philippine Islands” because they were claimed by Manila King Phillip II (1546-1602). He therefore likely mistook these islands for India or Japan due to their similarities in shape and size! From Hispaniola on July 2nd1504 through August 24th1504Columbus discovered Bahamas (now Turks And Caicos Islands), Antigua (now Barbuda), Grenada (now Montserrat), Dominica (now Dominico), Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (now Saint Vincent & The Grenadines), Curaçao (Now Caribbean Netherlands.),[and] Puerto Rico! These discoveries increased Spain’s power within Europe as well as potential profits from maritime trade with Asia! Viewing these new lands as opportunities rather than challenges motivated Christopher Columbus throughout his life - including when exploring America! It wasn't until 1493 when an expedition led by Bartholomew Roberts failed to find any gold worth exploiting that exploration yielded any real success; however Christopher's legacy lives on still today! The first European to explore and settle in what is now Columbus, Georgia was the Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan. He sailed from Spain on July 2, 1521, and reached Guam on November 25 of that year. On December 20, he sighted land about 90 miles (140 km) southeast of Guam and named it Isla de la Florida after King Philip II of Spain. Magellan continued sailing eastward until his ship ran into difficulties in January 1522. He abandoned his attempt to return home and decided to search for a new route home. After three years of exploration, Magellan returned to Spain in April 1524 with news that he had reached the Philippines!
