College Park, Georgia is a town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 21,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1802 by James Robeson and others as a small post on the Chattahoochee River. In 1814, College Park became the second college west of the Appalachian Mountains when it opened as Atlanta Female Seminary. In 1827, it became a county seat with other towns within Fulton County following its incorporation into government. In 1860, during the American Civil War, College Park sided with Confederate forces over Union forces and was sacked by Union troops under General Robert Ewell. The town surrendered on October 15th of that year and most of its citizens were taken prisoner or killed including many local merchants who had not collaborated with the Confederacy. After the war ended in 1865, many returning soldiers settled in College Park and helped to build what is now known as "The Robes". Many residents also returned to business operations once Reconstruction began after the end of hostilities. After years of growth and development, College Park Explosion occurred on December 5th 1904 when an unknown person threw dynamite into a building then detonated it causing extensive damage to both businesses and homes within three blocks radius
