College Park, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 25,813 at the 2010 census. The city is home to the Gwinnett County Jail and two nationally-recognized universities: Georgia State University and Mercer University. The first settlement in what is now College Park was made by Captain James Robertson of the British East India Company in 1785. He named his land "Baldwin's Station" after his friend and business partner John Baldwin of Savannah,Georgia. In 1801, Colonel George Wilson founded what would become Gwinnett County on land that he had purchased from Baldwin. In 1837, Peach Orchard Road was built as a road between College Park and Alpharetta to facilitate trade between the two towns. The original town site was located near present day Peachtree Street/Broadwater Avenue and Third Avenue/John Fenton Boulevard. By 1840, peach orchards covered most of what is now downtown College Park; however early settlers were unable to grow crops because of poor soil conditions. A school was established in 1841 by local farmers with the assistance of subscription from citizens; it became known as Atlanta Female Academy (now historically known as Emory & Henry). Downtown College Park quickly grew into an important commercial district during the antebellum period due to its location on Peach Orchard Road just south of Third Avenue/John Fenton Boulevard where several stores including Pemberton's grocery store (later JCPenney) operated along with several small hotels including Iredell House Hotel which remains standing today as one of only three buildings still extant from that era in downtown College Park – along with Gadsden Castle being destroyed during World War II In 1860 when Atlanta City Hall moved from Fourth Street South to what is now inside University Square behind Gaillard Center for Fine Arts building, Downtown College Park lost much of its prominence as commerce shifted away from central business districts towards university squares aroundAtlanta thanks largely to new transportation options developed during Reconstruction Era such as streetcars
