The College Park area of Atlanta was first settled in 1785 by English colonists. The area became a part of the United States in 1868, when it was granted to Georgia by the US government. In 1893, the College Park School District was created and educational institutions were established in the area including Gwinnett County High School and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. In 1955, College Park was annexed by Cobb County and has since been known as Cobb County's largest city.
