In 1865, Colonel John C. Breckinridge and his men abandoned their supplies and marched north to join the Confederate army. After a month of combat, they were driven back by Union forces. In order to escape capture, Breckinridge's men built a fence around an old plantation in College Park, Georgia. This is now known as the "Breckinridge Fence". The first bipods were invented in 1892 by Major General George Armstrong Custer during his battle with the Sioux in Montana. These bipods were made from two short pieces of metal that could be combined together to create a sturdy walking stick or tripod. The first bipods were used by Infantrymen in World War I. College Park is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is located on the northern border of metro Atlanta. The city started as a small settlement on the site of what is now downtown College Park in 1847 by Capt. John Ritchie and Lt. Col. George Washington Cote with land they acquired from the Creek Nation. In 1865, college students from Emory University founded Georgia Institute of Technology (GIT) on campus near what is now Ponce de Leon Avenue and Peachtree Street. GIT's first president was Dr. James Aiken who served until 1876 when he was succeeded by Dr Samuel Mudd (1820-1892). In 1870, College Park residents voted to annex portions of Decatur County which included current-day College Park and portions of Fulton County including Roswell, Alpharetta and Griffinburgh; this annexation formed the nucleus for today’s community that exists today as College Park City Schools District #1. At its peak in population around 1910, there were over 25 churches inCollege Park with a total membership exceeding 100,000 people! In 1925 – following World War II – College Park became an organized municipality with its own board of commissioners chaired by Mayor Lillian Hinton (1906-1974). The first mayor was Alvin Bogan who served from 1945 to 1949; after his term ended property values decreased due to war shortages while crime increased because post-war army soldiers returned home alone etc.; however schools such as ISD 1 continued to improve while many businesses closed leaving jobs open only for men so women could no longer attend school full time without risk of employment loss; this situation changed when Hinton appointed Mrs Florence King as her first female mayor making her one of college park’s longest serving mayors ever (served until she retired in 2001). AfterMrs King’s retirement two new mayors were elected:Dr Willie Horton Jr.,who served from 2002 to 2006 and thenMr David Teague who took office January 1st 2007 thru December 31st 2009 after being elected Mayor Pro Tem during Governor Nathan Deal’s final term before he became Governor himself After Mr Teague left office Community Action Agency Board member Reva Phillips ran successfully against him for re-election unopposed on November 3rd 2013 becoming the first African American woman ever elected mayor pro tem in Georgias history despite heavy opposition throughout her campaign season courtesy DARE PAC funded ads run by local Republican Party committee members targeting black voters all across metro Atlanta finally giving Phillips an opportunity to lead our city once again into tomorrow night!
