The original courthouse building (now known as the State Library) was built between 1851 and 1863 by Alexander Decatur Marshall Sr., who served as mayor of Atlanta from 1849-1861 and again from 1865-1867; it was replaced by the current structure about 1890. The courthouse is also significant because it housed both the first court systemin Georgia (the Cumberland County Court House) and later that state's first Superior Court system (). In 1898, Chattahoochee River Bridge Company began construction on what would become Georgia's only suspension bridge overthe river within sight of Chamblee; when finished, it connected Chattahoochee Valley with Chatham County to the south and west while providing direct access between downtown Atlanta and northern suburbs such as Marietta and Roswell.
