Today, much of what used to be downtown Chamblee is now part of Midtown Atlanta; while portions of downtown remain near Chatsworth Road and Willoughby Drive (the main commercial thoroughfare), much of older parts are now residential areas north and west of Interstate 75/US-4 (I-75/US-4 Loop). The history of Chamblee goes back to 1806 when General James Chalmers moved his army from Athens,Georgia, to take possessionof this new frontier land after winning a military engagement against Creek Indians at Pensacola Bayou. He called this new community "Chalmersburgh," after himself (and not General Chalmers' Creek Native American allies). In 1807, Congress passed an act establishing a government for this territory under Major John Smith - which also included Chattahoochee River boundaries - though no town ever materialized until 1811 when Captain William Fenton erected a log courthouse on what is now Second Street in central Chamblee just south of present day Third Street intersection with US-4 exit ramp off I-75/US-4 Loop eastbound (now Third Street exit ramp off I-75/US 4 Loop westbound). This courthouse served as both court house and jail until it burned down around 1850 CE; however, its logs still stand today as partErected by Captains Cook & Henshaw circa 1865 CE
