The town was founded in 1805 by John Chamblee and his wife Ann (née Willoughby). The first post office was established in 1807. In 1830, James Fayette Kilpatrick settled here and named it after himself. He may have been inspired by General James Fayette Kilpatrick who fought in the American Revolution and then served as a U.S. Senator from Georgia from 1793 to 1800. Chamblee took its name from him; however, other sources claim that Kilpatrick had nothing to do with the settlement's name change. Chamblee is mentioned twice in early Georgia history: once as a place where Andrew Johnson drank water from a well during an outbreak of measles in 1837, and again as the location where General Nathan Bedford Forrest built his White House in 1905-06 while serving as President of interstate commerce for Tennessee

Chamblee is a small city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. Chamblee is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Chamblee was founded in 1834 by General James Wilkinson and his wife Sarah Snodgrass Wilkinson as a cotton plantation named "Centerville". The town was incorporated in 1892. The town's first buildings were built on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. In 1835, General Wilkinson purchased 4 miles (6 km) of land north of the river and began to build what would become known as Chamblee Plantation. The original white inhabitants of Chamblee were African Americans who worked on the plantation and helped to grow rice for export to Europe. By 1840, about 60% of all workers on the plantation were African Americans; however, by 1850 only about 10% of all employees were African American, due to increased competition from European-owned plantations. In 1892, after years of growth and development under local control, Chamblee became an independent city with its own government and police force. On January 1st, 1912 Chamblee became one of just two cities in Fulton County (the other being Peachtree City) that did not ratify a new form of government called Municipal Leagueism which attempted to reduce municipal debt while maintaining autonomy within Fulton County government. During World War II Chamblee served as an important military base for both Allied forces and Japanese forces during Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). Afterward much trade took place between America and Japan through Chatham Hotel which still stands today across from US Airways Center/Delta Airlines Terminal 2A). The Japanese presence ended abruptly when it was revealed that they had been taking over American citizens' mailbags full of gold coins intended for shipment back home! All mailbags containing gold coins have been recovered so far but no arrests have been made yet...Stay tuned!
