Chamblee is a town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,584 at the 2010 census. Chamblee is located on the Chattahoochee River and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. It is one of two towns in Cobb County with a post office (the other being Decatur). The name "Chamblee" likely comes from the Cherokee word "chamba," meaning swamp or bog. In 1828, Captain James Cook discovered a salt lick near what is now Chamblee and named it after his friend and mentor Rear Admiral Sir John Byng. Byng had been captain of HMS " Discovery ", which explored the eastern seaboard of North America during the 17th century. In 1841, Abraham Lincoln visited Chatham during his presidential campaign for Congress; he noticed that many people in Chatham were farmers who could support only a single crop year out of four because they depended on navigation on the Chattahoochee River for their income. He asked then-Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest if he could make an appropriation to build a canal across the river so that more people could get access to irrigation water without having to rely on boat traffic from downstream rivers. Forrest agreed and helped finance construction of this canal, which became known asthe Lincoln Canal. Chamblee's earliest settlers were men who worked along Drury Lane Plantation near present-day Marietta until 1800 when they moved to what is now south Chamblee Road. They brought with them their slaves, who lived in large plantations until 1865 when all white slaveowners in Georgia allowed freedmen to own property and work farmsteads free as well as own landholdings separate from their slaves). Thereafter most black residents continued living separately on large cotton plantations until after World War II when they were integrated into white neighborhoods throughout central Georgia; however some continue to live within Confederate lines today while maintaining their African heritage through traditional ceremonies such as coronavirus burial rites (a practice unique to certain Black Belt cultures). Many commercial establishments such as Piggly Wiggly opened up around 1920s followed by auto dealerships during late 1940s and 1950s before becoming retail stores by 1970s although there are still several businesses left untouched since those years like The Pharmacy which closed in 1980 but its pharmacy building still stands next door still used by Sears Roebuck & Co since 1980 also known locally simply as “The Pharmacy” despite no longer being open for business

Chamblee was founded in 1838 by the brothers John and James Chamblee. The Chamblees were a Quaker family from Pennsylvania. They built their first home on the current site of the Chamblee Mall, which they named after their father, Colonel Samuel Chamblee. In 1839, the Chamblees moved to what is now Georgia and began trading with the Cherokee Indians. In 1841, they married Hannah Hawkins and started a family. The Hawkins family would continue to live in Chattahoochee Valley until 1946 when they moved to Rome, Georgia. In 1886, John Chamblee died at age 89 years old. His brother James took over his business as well as running Chatham County for him for many years until his death in 1954. James' wife had died two years earlier at age 80 years old. Their son John III continued running Chatham County until his death in 1968 at age 83 years old. Their daughter Anna Bessie Chalmers-Chamberlain ran it until her death in 1984 at age 86 years old; she waswidowed after her husband's death also that year). The Chamblees are buried next to each other in an unmarked grave at Elmwood Cemetery near Rome, Georgia
