Chamblee's history goes back to 1836 when it was known as "Cheatham." It was renamed after General James H. Chamblee who fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as a U.S. Congressman from Georgia from 1885-1887. In 1915, the town began to grow with the founding of Coca-Cola Bottling Company which shifted most of its manufacturing to Chamblee from other locations in northwest Georgia due to its low labor costs and proximity to Interstate 85 (I-85). Chamblee has been consistently ranked one of America's fastest growing towns according to Forbes magazine since its establishment in 1999 outperforming such cities as Phoenix, Dallas/Fort Worth, Orlando and Jacksonville Florida by almost 20%). The first settlers in what would become Chamblee arrived around 1800 on Major Edward Thomas' plantation named "Gordon". By 1806 there were 8 families living there including Capt John Gordon who donated land for a road that led into present day Chattahoochee River valley where he built his home called "Hagood House" now known as Gordon House Museum on Farmington Street just off Highway 19A near the old post office building today known as Snell's Drug Store & BBQ restaurant located across from First Baptist Church located on Parkway South between US Hwy 285W and I-285E The first store open in what would become Chamblee was established by Daniel Gibbs about 1798 under the name "Gibbs' Store" it closed about 1840 but reopened about 1850 again under the name of "Gibbs' Exchange". A post office called "Chamblee" was established in 1836 by Order No. 5685 issued by Governor James Holcombe It changed hands several times before finally being acquired by Samuel Greggs with his partner David Hill around 1840 who named it Greggs’ Post Office next door their house on Academy Road above Route 9N just south of present day Harrison High School today known as Old Hagood House Museum & Battlefield Museum located off SW 3rd St between I-10 & I-285W within walking distance of Halls Ferry Marina

In 1865, Chamblee was incorporated as a city and experienced rapid growth thanks to its infrastructure and natural resources. Chamblee's economy declined during the 20th century but has recently regained some stability. Today, Chamblee is a major cultural center in Georgia with numerous cultural attractions including several universities, a library system, and a variety of professional services.
