In 1820, George Washington establish a ferry service between Decatur and Athens; this allowed travelers coming down the river from Chattanooga and other southeastern counties to cross over into Chattahoochee Valley for supplies and trade. This Ferry Company became known as "Washington's Ferry". In 1825, John Wesley Harding established a school in what is now Chamblee Township. It was one of several schools established by Harding during his two terms as Governor of Georgia (1827-29). In 1839, Captain James Fenton bought 640 acres (2 km²) in what is now Chamblee Township from Josiah Gregg for $4 per acre ($/acre today). He named it Fenton's Mill after himself and erected a millrace on the stream that flows through his land. The mill continued operating until it burned down in 1865 due to arson by some local boys when they were looking for treasure buried near the millrace. Chamblee started as just a small village with only six homes built around 1850 by Methodist missionaries working among Cherokee Indians living nearby on Hwy 11 (the present day US 75 corridor).
