It is also the birthplace of American singer-songwriter Aretha Franklin. The first European settlers in what is now Fulton County were French colonists known as La Flotte. They arrived in 1692 and named their settlement "Chamblee." In 1715, when James Oglethorpe moved his colony from Savannah to what is now Fulton County, he founded what would become Chamblee with some land that he had acquired from La Flotte. The first post office was established in 1721 at this location. Chamblee remained an agricultural community until after World War II when it became an industrial center with production of cotton and other products such as tires and plastics. Afterward, Chamblee experienced declines in its economic status due to rural migration and loss of jobs in manufacturing industries; however, it has seen recent resurgence with new development including a high school football stadium and new ballpark for the Atlanta Braves baseball team which opened in 2009.

Chamblee is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Chamblee is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Chamblee was James A. Dickey in 1837. In 1845, W E Hogg purchased land from Dickey for $1,000 and donated it to the Methodist Church as a gift. The town was platted in 1847 by Captain George Troup of the USS Constitution under his patent #9270. The railroad arrived in Chamblee on July 1, 1865 and helped stimulate population growth. Chamblee’s heyday came during World War II when demand for munitions increased due to the war effort and wartime production shortages caused by rationing programs set forth by Franklin D Roosevelt and Harry S Truman. Chamblee became an important munitions manufacturing center with many companies such as Raytheon and General Dynamicsbased here including North American Aviation (later McDonnell Douglas). Many local residents also played roles in these companies through their careers or businesses that took place here such as sales representatives, engineers, managers and product testers. In recent years much work has been done to revive downtown Chamblee which has seen redevelopment efforts including new restaurants/bars/cafes/entertainment venues; extensive renovations to Municipal Court buildings; addition of new public transportation options; development of a new public park system; and rehabilitation of old brick buildings that have been vacated or are no longer used for housing or business purposes but provide natural beauty features such asroot systems and walkways around ponds found within the community boundaries
Chamblee was founded in 1853 by John Chamblee and was named for him. It is the seat of government for DeKalb County, Georgia. The city was incorporated in 1907.
