It lies on the Chattahoochee River about 12 miles (19 km) north of Atlanta and is part of the Roswell Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1819 by General James McDonough and named for him, Cedartown Creek running through it. It became an independent community in 1834 and then its own school district in 1868. The first post office opened in 1829, and the first store was built in 1835. In 1859, the town Carnegie Library was built; it remained a library until it closed in 1958. Industry has been important to Cedartown since its foundation: cotton ginning began here in 1865 and died out after World War II; shoe manufacturing began here also but stopped around 1960; computers were produced at nearby GAINZ from 1969 to 1992 before being moved to Alpharetta; and various other businesses have arisen over time including auto parts dealership, convenience store, hair salon/beauty salon, doctor's office/clinic (two locations), grocery store (which closed down around 1990), restaurant (Closed Down Now), gasoline station (closed down around 1990), lumberyard (closed down around 1990).
