The town was founded in 1848 by Jackson and his brother Welsh Cadartown. It was named for General James Cadartown, who fought in the Mexican–American War and later became a U.S. Senator from Georgia. The first post office in Cedartown was established on December 6, 1848, by Wm Fenton and others under the name of "Jacksonburgh." It served until May 10, 1850 when it changed its name to "Cadarta." On October 15, 1870, an act was passed that changed the name of Cadarta to "Cedartown." The town site was laid out and built on December 12, 1868 by Enoch Rice with assistance from Gideon Welles and others under the direction of John Darnall. It took two years to build all that is now present day Cedartown; construction began on July 14th of that year and ended on September 9th 1870. The original courthouse building still stands today as does most of the main street through town which leads from it to Main Street which runs through downtown Athens (now known as State Street). In 1881 local resident Jno Hinton donated land for what would become DeKalb County Courthouse Square; this square has been home to many important events including inaugurations of both Presidents George Washington Carver (1893) and Franklin D Roosevelt (1940). In 1907 a new school house was built west of Main Street opposite De Kalb High School; this structure remains standing today as part of the Town Hall Complex which includes a library/theatre complex dating back to 1936 also known as Community Center/Pitkin Auditorium/. In 1933 several homes were destroyed by fire while being used for summer vacation campers living within ½ mile radius; these fires resulted in $450 per family being paid off for damages done to their property ($10 per night) at that time due Code Enforcement regulations at that time governing how much temporary housing could be erected within 500 feet radiusof any business or public building without prior written consent from owner(s).
