The post office operated until 1907. During World War II, many local industries produced munitions including munitions factories and shipyards located along Peachtree Street downtown and on Bald Mountain near where Interstate 20 meets I-85. During this time, much of Cedartown's downtown business district was destroyed or damaged by bombing raids which took place over various weeks beginning in December 1942 and continuing into January 1943

The first settler in what would become Cedartown was John Wilkinson in 1827. Wilkinson had come from England and married a woman from that country. He settled near present-day Decatur Street and Third Avenue south of downtown Atlanta. The first post office was established at Cedartown on October 10, 1830. By 1840 there were about 20 households living here with six stores and one blacksmith shop located along Third Avenue between current-day Fourth Street and Fifth Street east of downtown Atlanta; there were no churches or schools here then either. In 1856 the legislature passed an act to incorporate this small town into Fulton County with headquarters atAtlanta; this occurred just before Reconstruction ended following the Civil War In 1861 Confederate Brigadier General Hugh Cadartouns home on Bainbridge Road (now North Druid Hills Drive) caught fire during a skirmish nearpresent-day Mastersboro/Lithonia Road; he fought heroically against Union troops until killed three days later while still receiving medical attention On January 8, 1865 when federal forces burned down Dahlgren Barracks northeast of Atlanta's city limits – strategic location for Confederate defenders –Captain John Wilkes Booth–a key conspirator behind President Abraham Lincoln's assassination—drove his carriages through main gates of Dahlgren Barracks bearing flagsylonstricken men leading horses wearing masks made him appear as if he had gone out to pasture instead Afterward most Confederate defenders surrendered without any fight or resistance leaving little evidence remaining today except for some markers
