Cedartown, Georgia is a small town located in Muscogee County, Georgia. The population was 5,782 at the 2010 census. Cedartown is home to the Cedartown Heritage Museum and Cemetery. The first settlers in what would become Cedarcreek Township were two families from Savannah, Georgia who arrived in 1795. They named their township after Captain James Cedars of the Savannah Navy Yard and his wife's family name (Dunn). Captain Cedars built a log cabin on the Chattahoochee River near present day Cedarcreek village in 1796. The Cedar Creek Settlement was organized on February 16, 1800 by Captain John Bowen and his family with four others as trustees for the purchase of 100 acres of land between Yellow Tavern Road and Cedar Creek to build a community known as “Bowen”. The first post office was established at Bowen on December 12, 1802. It remained open until it was discontinued on January 1, 1865 due to lack of customers. A new post office called Cedarcreek was established at what is now downtown Cedarcreek on November 3, 1827 by order of Governor Andrew Jackson; it remained open until it became part of Muscogee County on January 1, 1907. In 1868 General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his Headquarters from Chattanooga to centrally located Muskogee County where he could oversee all military operations throughout central Alabama and Tennessee without having to leave his headquarters in Chattanooga proper

Cedartown is located about 12 miles (19 km) east of Atlanta and 10 miles (16 km) north of Decatur. The first settler in Cedartown was Andrew Pickens, who arrived here from Tennessee in 1827. He built a cabin on the riverbank and named his settlement for Saint Cadarttus, one of the apostles who helped build Christianity into a global religion. After Pickens died, his wife took over the leadership of the community and it continued to grow steadily through the years until it attained its current size in 1870. During Reconstruction era (1865-1877), Cedartown enjoyed some notoriety as a hotbed of black Republican activity due to its location within easy commuting distance of Athens, which had become known as "the Black Belt." This area had been devastated by white violence and Reconstruction efforts during that time period were aimed at reversing these trends. In addition to providing an opportunity for African Americans to start their own businesses, this area also served as an important training ground for future civil rights protesters such as SNCC leader Stokely Carmichael. In recent years, however, Cedartown has seen increasing popularity among residents because of its excellent local schools and diverse attractions such as its much-loved golf course and historical sites such as Fort Cobbetts battlefields which are open to visitors during regular business hours only.
