The name change may have been due to confusion with another small town in Fulton County with that same name which had already been renamed Cedar Shoals during that same period; however, no evidence exists to support this claim. In 1902-1903, one of the first schools in Cedartown school districtopened under instruction from Miss Mabel Cooks (a white girl). After serving for one year as a school for black children only, it became open to all students on September 1st 1903 when Mrs J B Hickey donated her home for use as an educational institution until 1928 when it closed its doors due to financial difficultiesitusuated by World War II military buildup in nearby Roswell NM . Cedartown is a small town located in east Georgia, about 25 miles northeast of Atlanta. The name Cedartown derives from the Creek word "cedar," meaning "a valuable tree." In 1814, before the area now known as Cedartown was settled, the Creek Indians burned down a white settlement near what is now Mechanicsville. The community's first settlers were Quakers who left Philadelphia for this site in 1795. There was no market for their goods and so they had to trade with other local communities. The first store in Cedartown was established by Joshua Hogg in 1802. By 1815, there were five stores in the community and it operated as an agricultural center with livestock, crops, and manufactured goods. By 1840, when Cherokee County was formed out of parts of Fulton and Gwinnett counties, Cedartown had become an important stagecoach stop on the road betweenAtlanta and Savannah. The arrival of railroads during the American Civil War brought new employment opportunities to Cedartown which began to grow rapidly after the war ended. During World War II, many jobs were created at General Motors plants in Decatur and elsewhere in eastern Georgia; but most importantly, Cedar Hill Creamery became one of Atlantans' largest employers during that time period because it produced high-quality ice cream for military troops throughout Southeast Asia

It prospered thanks to its rich mineral resources, and by the 1830s it had become one of the most important slave-holding towns in Georgia. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee came to Cedartown with 10,000 men to help suppress a slave rebellion there. Many people in Cedartown sided with the South, and many were killed or captured during the Battle of Cedartown. After the war, Cedartown lost some of its importance but continued to exist as a small town until it was absorbed into Atlanta in 2000.
