In 1865, Confederate Major General Barnard Easley outpost Campobello onthe Chattahoochee River near what is now Cedartown during an attempt to subdue Union forces operating around Daltonville south of Marietta. Confederate forces burned several homes in retaliation for an attack on their lines earlier that year by Union troops under Colonel John Fenton Hillman – this event is generally known as the Battle of Cedartown or Battle of Gullah Island. Aftermath: Over 100 people were killed, most notably children John Fenton Hillman threw into Lake Lanier while fleeing capture; 150 were captured & transported back to Chattanooga with other capital offenders; remaining residents abandoned their homes before being forced out by Federal forces June 1865 when they surrendered unconditionally at Appomattox Court House surrounded by burning buildings
