Afterward, he owned several slaves and started developing his holdings around Cedartown. In 1824, he founded Cedartown on land that he had acquired from his brother-in-law, James Robertson. The town rapidly grew due to its natural resources: coal mining began in earnest after General Andrew Jackson landed at Dahlonega on July 12, 1825 and developed it into one of Georgia's most important industrial centers during his time as president (1829–1836). The town prospered throughexport of goods such as cotton and lumber; however, it also experienced significant growth due to immigration from Europe during this period. By 1860, when Confederate General Robert Ewell burned Atlanta along with much of Georgia, Cedartown was among the few towns remaining within Union territory untouched by warring armies. Despite this fortunate circumstance, economic decline followed throughout Reconstruction until finally experiencing robust population growth following World War II as industry expanded southward into new markets such as Alabama and Florida.
Cedartown was a small town in Lumpkin County, Georgia, United States until the early 20th century. The population was about 350 at the time of its incorporation as a town in 1866. In recent years, Cedartown has experienced steady decline, with most of its residents moving away or leaving out of necessity due to poverty or lack of opportunities.
