Cedartown is an unincorporated community in Dawson County, Georgia, United States. It is located on the Chattahoochee River, west of Chattanooga. The community was founded in 1881 by a group of investors from Chattanooga who named it for Confederate General James Cedartown. The first permanent store in Cedartown was opened in 1883 by Elisha Fenton and his brother-in-law, George Stephenson. Fenton built the store on the site of what is now the Cedartown Baptist Church. The store operated until 1886 when it was replaced by a large brick building that still stands today. In 1909, Troup Electric Company began operations in Cedartown and donated two 500 kilowatt light bulbs to the townspeople. This made Cedartown one of the first towns in the country to have electricity available to its residents. In 1925, Mrs. Wanda Gadsden donation made possible construction of a new high school which became known as "The Gadsden School" after her husband, Representative Wanda Gadsden (D-GA). In 1951, Humble Oil Company donated three oil wells to Cedartown so that we could provide local businesses with energy independence during World War II. These wells were later used for residential development around them and are now part of Druid Hills Park

In 1830, when slavery was abolished in Georgia, many African Americans moved to Cahaba County because of new opportunities available there from freedom under the Constitution of America (1865). Many of these black entrepreneurs started businesses within Cadartown including one clothing store which remain open today as part of JCPenney corporate headquarters complex located off I-285 exit 190A eastbound near US Highway 280B . In 1840s & 1850s much agricultural production took place here including cotton ginners warehouses being built along Main Street and later replaced by larger ones on Fayette Road; corn cribs lining Telegraph Road; tannery on Old Fairgrounds Road; sawmill on Tryon Hill Rd.; distillery on High Bridge Rd.; cheese factory on SW corner Broad street between Westside Drive & Tryonhill Drive; bakery operated out of home until 1908 on NW corner Broad Street between Eastside Drive & Tryonhill Drive before moving into more modern facilities west side drive southward beginning 1928

Cedartown was founded in 1795 by General James Robertson as a plantation on the Chattahoochee River. The town grew rapidly, and in 1815 it became the county seat of Gwinnett County. In 1825, the town was renamed for General George Rogers Clark, who had fought in the American Revolution and helped to win independence from Great Britain. The town remained an important center of trade until the 1950s, when it declined due to economic development in nearby Atlanta.
