Cedartown is a town in northeast Georgia on the Chattahoochee River. The population was 1,906 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Cedartown community began as a small farming village located on the north side of the Chattahoochee River about three miles east of present-day Cedartown. On July 6, 1821, General James A. Ross founded and named his new settlements for General Andrew Jackson after their victory during the Battle of Horseshoe Bend at that location two years earlier. In 1825, General John Bell Hood's army passed through this area and encampment became known as "Hood's Landing." In 1829, Colonel James Davenport organized a militia company from local men to suppress Indian uprisings in what is now northwest Georgia. The first post office was established in this community on December 2, 1830 by Jno. Waddell with Eufaula being its second post office opened four days later. On October 10, 1857, Revs Fayette Blythe (1820-1892) and Augustus Morrison (1831-1912) organized an Episcopal church congregation called Grace United Methodist Church which moved to its current building at 401 North Broad Street in 1921 also known as Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church where they preached until their death in 1992; they are buried there also along with other pioneer pastors who helped shape our denomination today including Drs Billy Graham (baptized 1927), Oral Roberts (baptized 1942), Bill Hyles (baptized 1945), Jerry Falwell Jr.(born 1952) and Rick Warren (born 1954). Reverend Blythe served as pastor from 1865 until his death in 1992 while Reverend Morrison served from 1922 until his death in 1912 before becoming one of America’s most famous preachers both nationally and internationally with some 700 congregations throughout North America plus numerous missionary assignments all over Africa where he spent many years traveling preaching gospel to black Africans before his sudden death aged 89years old on February 12th 1998 after an extended illness
Cedar Township was established in 1819 and the first post office was opened in 1824. The township became a part of Whitfield County in 1827. In 1829, Cedar Township was renamed to Cedartown because of the growth of Cedar Grove Cemetery there. The population of Cedartown grew rapidly due to its location near the new Georgia Railroad and cotton plantations. By 1870, the population had increased to over 1,500 people and it remained at that level until 1900.
