Cedartown, Georgia is a small town located on the Gulf of Mexico in Paulding County. The town was founded in 1849 by surveyors working for the government. Cedartown is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2000 census. Cedartown is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Cedartown was founded in 1825 by Captain George Washington Cadwallader and his wife Deborah Cadwallader. They named it after their home state of Virginia, where they had been born and raised. In 1831, Captain Cadwallader and his family moved to nearby Decatur and began trading cattle for goods shipped down the Chattahoochee River from Georgia. Over time, the Cadwalladers added other businesses such as a grocery store and a shoe store before settling into cotton farming in 1840. In 1865, Lieutenant Colonel John Capps organized a militia unit called "The Georgians" to resist Confederate soldiers besieging Athens during the American Civil War. While staying at Cedartown on October 15th, 1865, General Robert Ewell arrived with his army to launch an attack on Athens that failed miserably due to lack of supplies and communications between units within Confederate Commanding General Edmund Kirby Smith's Army of Northern Georgia commanded by Major General James Longstreet. On December 12th 1865 Captain Cadwallader officiated at a public funeral for Kirby Smith when he died from wounds received during the Battle of Resaca (along with many other officers) less than one week earlier while leading elements of what became known as the “ Lost Battalion” Regiment (later redesignated 3rd Infantry). A plaque marking this event can be found at locally owned Lighthouse Point Marina which has since closed down but parts are still used commercially as restaurant seating & there is also an active lighthouse tour operation running currently (year round) led by local historian / docent Bob Cook which takes visitors up inside & shows some interesting artifacts including original light buildings dating back to 1893-1895

The town grew rapidly, and in 1815 it became a political center after the fall of Atlanta to the United States. In 1824, Cadartown became an independent city with its own mayor and council. It remained an important commercial and cultural center until the late 20th century, when it lost its significance largely due to suburban development.
