Cedartown is a small town in Swain County, Georgia. The population was 1,967 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Cedartown is located on the east side of the Cumberland Mountains, about 12 miles north of downtown Atlanta and 14 miles south of Decatur. The first settlers in what is now Cedartown were Quakers who arrived around 1785. They built a gristmill on the site that still stands today. The mill was used until 1892 when it was destroyed by fire. A few years later, a sawmill was erected on the same site and remained in operation until 1922. In 1865, Jno. Hamer erected a school which served both local children and students from surrounding communities for many years before it was replaced by a new schoolhouse in 1902 which still serves as a community center today. In 1881, John Cramer erected an agricultural store and post office which remain extant to this day (though their features have changed). In 1907, he also constructed an extensive farm complex that included four barns, five corn cribs (for storing maize), four hay bales (to be used for cattle feed), three plows and one wagon axle; his donation remains one of the most significant donations ever made to Cedartown - it has been estimated that this facility alone financed more than $100 worth of improvements to the town’s infrastructure over its lifetime including roads, sidewalks and water main construction In 1916, white farmers banded together to purchase 2200 acres (10 km2) adjacent to present-day Cedartown from two black farmers for $1 per acre ($40 per hectare). This land would become known as “the cotton fields” because so much cotton was grown here during World War II – up until then, this area had been used solely for corn farming The cotton fields were very productive due to their well-drained soil and sandy loam substrate which allowed for high yields with little use of fertilizers or pesticides . Due to their productivity there were also large areas available for other crops such as potatoes and peanuts but these crops did not survive due to lack of rainfall or bad weather conditions . After World War II ended however production shifted back towards cotton because that is where most of America's new export markets were located

They are also one of the most visited tourist attractions in Cedartown.
