Cedartown is a small town located in Muscovy County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,830 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke metropolitan area. The Cedartown Volunteer Fire Department was organized on October 25, 1882 by a group of nine men who gathered to purchase shotguns and lock up their firearms. The Cedartown Rifle Club was founded in 1895 and provided members with rifles for target practice and hunting. On November 3, 1896, the Cedartown Post office was established as a result of the merger of two other post offices in town - Old Stone House and Hickory Hill. The first postmaster was Mrs. Hilda Gadsden Smith (1862-1930). The U.S. Postal Service discontinued mail delivery to Cedartown on May 1, 1954 due to budget cuts. As a result, the last package delivered to Cedartown was an order from Montgomery Ward that same day! On July 4, 1961 an ordinancewas passed which limited handgun ownership within one city block in each direction within Muscovy County limits; this law still applies today outside of Muscovy County limits! In response to this restriction local gun dealers formed "Cedarta Gun Clubs" which allowed residents from out of town access to their firearms without prior permission from their owner or dealer! In early 1986 a major fire destroyed much of downtown Cedarta leaving many businesses closed for over a week while firefighters rehabilitated the infrastructure On Saturday September 24th 2006 four stores including Sears were damaged by an arsonist who set several fires inside

The community was named for Captain John Cedart (1723-1798), an American Revolutionary War soldier and captain of HMS Shark. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson defeated Major Robert Ewell at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, which led to his rise to power as president of the United States. During his time as president, Jackson made Cedartown his headquarters during the Indian Removal Campaign. This campaign saw more than 100,000 Native Americans driven from their homes across Georgia and Tennessee to become stateless Indians on reservations in Oklahoma and Dakota Territory. Today, Cedartown remains a small town with a diverse population that includes both residents who have lived there all their lives and newcomers who are drawn to its history and culture. Cedartown has been inhabited by American Indian and Cherokee people for over three centuries. The first white person to arrive in what is now Cedartown was James Cobb in 1831. The town began as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River betweenAtlanta and Chattanooga. A store and hotel were built there in 1836, and by 1840 there were two schools, one for boys and one for girls. The first storekeeper was George Mabeecky III. In 1847 an act of the Georgia General Assembly granted land to John Hogg for a military road from Rome to Savannah called the Richmond Road. This road led through Cedartown to Hogg's house on Depot Street today's courthouse square, which became known as "Hoggsville". In 1850–51 plans were made to build a wagon ferry across the river between Chattanooga and Fulton Station on what is now I-85W near present day Cedartown Township (the original village). However this project never got off the ground because of lack of funding or interest from local residents or businesses who saw it as an opportunity to trade with neighborlier towns along the riverfront instead of relying on boats that would get caught in rapids or be lost when flooding occurred during wet seasons like those experienced regularly during later years. In 1853 James Cobb donated land east of where he lived now within present day Cedartown Township limits for a schoolhouse, cemetery, church and other community amenities which served both black and white people living in his area at that time including women who cooked food for their husbands' plantations until after Reconstruction ended with new laws giving equal rights to all races throughout most southern states (excepting Georgia). One hundred years later Dr. William Jernigan located two coal seams west of where he lives today within present day Cadastral boundaries just south of Old Hickory Lake before developing them into what we know today as Appalachian Coal Fields Ltd., also known historically as Industrial Valley Coal Mines Incorporated & Econo Coal Field Corp., still operating today without any serious recent pollution problems thanks mostly to good management over many decades! Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst von Bismarck had vacationed here while visiting friends in 1901-02 when he penned his famous quote "Estranged from home but not from history" dedicating it ironically – perhaps metaphorically – to then-Governor Bulloch who had vetoed similar legislation bilaterally negotiated by von Bismarcker seeking German annexation of Spanish Florida following America’s Civil War victory—a move that would have reunited Spain with her former colonies along much US Gulf Coast! During World War II production at nearby Marietta Army Ammunition Plant produced munitions such as bombsights used by Allied forces against Nazi Germany; even though these plants are no longer open they left behind evidence including bomb fragments found scattered around towntoday!
