The town began as a stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1800s, helping fugitive slaves escape from slavery in South Carolina and other states. In 1802, Cedar Grove was renamed for General George Washington's family because they were among his few friends in America. The town developed around its cotton plantations until after World War II when manufacturing became predominant and jobs stopped coming to Cedartown Today, Cedartown remains an important agricultural community with corn, soybeans, hay, cattle, horses and poultry production accounting for most of its economic activity.

Cedartown, Georgia is a small town in east-central Georgia. The population was 5,597 at the 2000 census. Cedartown is the county seat of Lawrence County and the only town in Lawrence County. The name "Cedartown" comes from the Creek word cedar which means "place of many oaks." The history of Cedartown dates back to 1801 when General James Wilkinson founded what is now Cedartown on land that he had purchased from the Cherokee Indians. In 1813, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters to Cadarboro during his Campaign against Mobile Bay. After Jackson's victory at New Orleans in April 1814, he ordered General Wilkinson to move his forces westward and take possession of all of present day Lawrence County. From this location, General Wilkinson issued orders for Captain Abraham Baldwin to build a road from Athens to Cadarboro (present day Watkinsville). Baldwin started construction on this road in 1819 and finished it in 1826. The first store was built in Cadarboro by John Gadsden about 1830. By 1840, there were six stores and four banks in Cadarboro with a population of 2,500 people. In 1850s through 1860s, there were several disputes between citizens over land titles or issues surrounding education or government financing forroads/roads necessary for trade between different parts of the country. One such issue concerned disputed ownership of a tract known as "Piney Woods". When one group began construction on an extending their farmstead into another part of Cedartown while also maintaining access to their woods via private roads they encountered resistance from neighbors who saw this as encroachment upon their rights as owners thereof; eventually successful negotiations produced an agreement whereby both groups sold their holdings back to each other without any further conflict before going ahead with their respective projects without incident (the Piney Woods tract still remains unincorporated). During Reconstruction following America's Civil War (1861-1865), many African Americans migrated to newly freed states including Georgia looking for work opportunities and opportunity for education; however, few if any attempts were made by local officials or businesses ownersto integrate these individuals into mainstream society either gradually or abruptly - instead most integration took place passively through gradual changes in social mores within African American communities themselves rather than through overt efforts by white supremacists intent on making them second class citizens akin to those living among European Americans prior to Emancipation which occurred three years earlier; thus some aspectsof traditional black cultural practices persisted even after free negroes reclaiming control over personal lives within their own communities throughout much eastern United States during late 19th century 1
