By 1830, the population had increased to around fifty people. In 1830, the first school was built in Cedartown and classes began on November 3rd that year. The town continued to grow rapidly until 1838 when it was burned down by the Creek Indians during a conflict between the white settlers and the Cherokee tribe. The remaining residents rebuilt Cedartown quickly but faced several challenges before reaching its current status as an independent community. One of these challenges was how to get goods needed for life such as food and clothing into the town without coming into contact with local landowners who could charge high prices for these items. Another challenge was finding enough workers to run the plantation plants given that there were only twelve people working at one point in time. Finally, many of the early pioneers also lost their lives while fighting against Indian attacks or trying to establish themselves as independent farmers within what is now known as Chattahoochee Valley National Forest
