Cedartown, Georgia is a small town located in the southernmost section of Fulton County on the Savannah River. It was founded by African Americans in 1838 and has been inhabited by whites and blacks for over 180 years. The community’s history with firearms began when black men from nearby Dahlonega began to buy guns to protect themselves from white men. The first gunsmith in Cedartown was J.W. Marriott, who worked at Hennepin Arms Company on Hillsborough Street. In 1839, David Lane opened his own gun shop on Second Street in town and soon became known as the “King of Gun Shops” in Cedartown. Over time, other gun dealers followed Lane’s lead and started selling firearms commercially to residents of Cedartown and surrounding counties. In 1860, John Sledge purchased land near Cedartown that would become the nucleus of what would eventually be called Hennepin County. This marked the beginning of a long relationship between Hennepin County and Cedartown which remains today one of the most important relationships between two communities in Georgia
