Cedartown, Georgia is a small town located in Madison County, Georgia. The population was 2,269 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cedartown is located on U.S. Route 41 and Interstate 521 east of Athens. The town was founded by Congregationalists in 1820 and named for Captain James Caldwell who led an expedition to explore the lower Chattahoochee River in that year. In 1828, Caldwell's nephew John Cecil bought the land which included present day Cedartown from James Caldwell's brother Russell Caldwell. The community was platted around 1830 and named for Colonel John Cedartown (1790-1847), one of the military commanders during the American Revolution who served as governor of North Carolina from 1819 to 1826 and president pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1830 to 1835. In 1840, General Nathan Bedford Forrest arrived in Athens with his Tennessee Volunteers and evicted many residents from their homes near Fort McAllister because he thought they were sympathizing with Federal forces besieging Atlanta. Many of these people fled to Cedartown where they built a new home called "Forsyth Park." Forrest pillaged this area during his campaign against Atlanta in April/May 1840 and some residents returned home only after he had withdrawn from the city
The history of gun chokes is a long and complex one. One of the earliest examples of firearm choke devices was the matchlock, which used an adjustable lever to cock the hammer. The name “matchlock” comes from the fact that it could only be fired by striking two pieces of wood at once (a lock) because if one piece was broken, the trigger would not work. In 1795, a man named Nicholas-Jacques Conte developed a system known as the French Twist choke. This choke required that the barrel be twisted in order to move some of the air out of it so that it could not fire when pulled back again. The twist also created a small hole in the barrel where gas escaped and this caused problems for firearms manufacturers who had to find ways to prevent their guns from firing when they were mishandled or knocked over. One such solution was called an English Twist choke, which involved twisting the barrel until there was no more space left between it and the stock. This allowed for easier loading and unloading with pistols and rifles, as well as preventing them from accidentally firing while being held in your hand.
