Cedartown is a small town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,382 at the 2010 census. Cedartown is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The name Cedartown comes from the Cherokee word " comic " meaning "to make fun of." The first inhabitants of what is now Cedartown were the Creek nation. They were pushed out by the British in 1763 and moved to this location because they had no other choice but to be near Fort Scott on the Chattahoochee River. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through this region during their march southward across Georgia towards Chattanooga. Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell blockaded Jackson's forces at Chickamauga Ridge, forcing him to retreat eastward and eventually into Tennessee. This event led to much bitterness between Americans and Confederates throughout the rest of Reconstruction Era America. In 1892, when a railroad was built through central Cobb County, businesses began wanting to locate in what is now Cedartown because of its close proximity to Atlanta proper. The first store opened up in 1893 on Depot Street just north of present-day First Avenue Sq., one year after Central Railroad Company established a line down that street from Marietta via Decatur Street west to downtown Atlanta (the original route). By 1907 there were six stores in town with a population of just over 100 people; all but one closed within five years due largely to competition fromAtlanta's growing population and better transportation options available outside town limits. The post-World War II boom times for Cedartown began with construction beginning on Interstate 285 in 1957 which connected Cedartown with nearby Dunwoody and Johns Creek as well as Philipsburg and Cartersville; these expansions brought more jobs into town while also providing new housing developments along Depot Street which are still active today including Bankers Trust Plaza (now Home Depot), Sheraton Hotel/Recreation Center (now Marriott), Live Oak Shopping Center (now Lowe's) and several Dollar Store chains like Soapstone Mall etc.). And yet even during these good times there have been occasional instances where local residents have voiced discontent about high crime rates (- particularly since2008) or about Athens' growth becoming too overwhelming for their limited resources (+ especially recently due to city councilwoman Janeeze Sultan's decision not add an additional stoplight at Philipsburg Boulevard intersection)). Nonetheless despite these challenges most citizens seem content enough overall
