Jubal Early attacked Union forces near here while they wereassembling their final defenses before Petersburg; his troops destroyed most of what remained of Chilton's store including all its equipment and machines.# For several years following this battle, many residents in Cedartown took up arms against Early's army and local hostility turned into support for him as he moved forward through central Georgia towards Petersburg.# After Early retreated to Chattanooga in Tennessee, some of these same people decided to return home and rebuild their homes which they did starting in 1865.. By 1870, there were more than 100 buildings in town with a population of 2,000 # Some residents kept building even after Reconstruction ended (1870-1875) but most left because there wasn't enough work available or because they didn't like how things had changed since the war began ## After World War II camexdnd technology changes so that there wasn't much demand for cotton anymore so many people moved away such as Donnie Bunch who founded Jurassic Park here## In recent years there have been efforts made to reopen old stores and businesses but few have stuck around long# Most people continue living close to home where they can get evening access to lighted streets and easy street parking## As always with any smalltown: There are some that succeed wonderfully while others struggle# And finally: everyone has their own unique story about why Cedartown exists

The first settlers in what would become Cedartown were farmers who came from North Carolina. The first store in town was built by John Brisbin and his wifeGrace around 1825. In 1830, Colonel James Hargrave donated land to form the town square which still stands today and has been used as a public gathering place for local events for over two hundred years. In 1834, David Foard purchased 4 miles (6 km) of west-southwest corner of present day east-west road between Musgrove Creek and Old Fort Barnstable Road and renamed it Cedartown after General Anthony Cedart who had helped lead the Confederate forces against Ulysses S Grant during the war. In 1840, Foard donated an additional 3 miles (4 km) of land to form a village square that still exists today within the bounds of modern-day Cedartown. The first school in town was built on Church Street by Mrs Blount around 1850; this building served as both schoolhouse and home until replaced by a new one in 1865 after voters approved a $2 per capita tax to support education in this unincorporated area. The Central School District #1 opened its doors on October 1st, 1866 with 24 students grades K-8th seats inside along with an upstairs “Atrium” classroom which could seat up to 40 students when needed due to increased enrollment throughout central Georgia due to railroad construction nearby and other industrial growth across the state line at that time including Cahawba Junction where black locals worked on railway construction gangs while whitefolk streamed into Atlanta looking for jobs). In 1870s several more stores opened including Mrs Hargrave’s Store operated by her son Jno., G W White’s Grocery & Department Store located at 917 Main Street (later renamed Peoples Drugstore), Dr Moore’s Pharmacy at 625 Main Street (later renamed Peoples Drugstore), Mrs England’s Laundry & Dry Goods at 712 Main Street (later renamed Peoples Drugstore) etc.; all these stores became part of various consolidated drugstores chains like CVS/pharmacy decisions later that same decade as Georgia Statehood drew closer meaning less competition for business from individual businesses especially those operating out of rural areas outside major cities like Atlanta or Savannah ). The post office also opened its doors on October 1st 1860 serving residents of towns like Dahlonega then Greer before moving its offices back to Athens in 1913 following rail travel linking Athens with Savannah making it easier for mail handlers - something not possible anymore once railways crossed into Alabama . During World War II many local men volunteered their services working on patriotic projects like manufacturing munitions or military intelligence while others took up farming or Oddfellows Lodging providing social services such as year-round child care through organizations such as Aid To Families With Dependent Children or Adult Day Care Centers; most notably Blue Grass Lodge which offered lodging and meals Programs with live music nightly throughout WWII becoming world famous thanks largely to controversial comedian Billy Graham hosting his popular evangelism TV program here during much of that time ).Cedartown experienced rapid growth following World War II with many new factories being erected along main streets such as old Home Hardware & Paint store went up next door supplanting original furniture store owner Mr Grimes closed shop & reopened under new name Peebles Hardware which continued operations until 1988 when it toowent bankrupt .Nowadays Cedarttown remains relatively small compared to larger metropolitan areas but offers significant historical highlights including impressive architecture ranging from Federal Style squares built during antebellum days thru 20th century revivalist style buildings associated with auto dealership culture now housing various businesses including three professional schools – USMLEDoctoral College Of Medicine ;SMU law school ;University Of South Mississippi – home of Hattiesburg campus ) while well preserved historic district centered around downtown core consisting primarily agricultural properties dating back centuries plus several smaller historic villages surrounding it containing dozens if not hundreds more homes , churches , Schools & Restaurants dotting Nearly every inch olreditoion range from high end restaurants near downtown via mom&pop cafes down low country places dotted throout abdomen

The first white settlers in Cedartown were Nathan Heard and his family, who arrived in 1785. They built a cabin on the east side of the creek and named it after their home town, Georgia. The Heard family continued to live in Cedartown until 1812. The first school in Cedartown was established in 1813 by Mr. James Cates. It was located on the corner of Church and State Streets. In 1828, the Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in Cedartown by Reverend J.M. French. The church operated until 1903 when it burned down. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his Headquarters from Richmond, Virginia to Chattanooga, Tennessee because of the war effort; he chose Cedartown as his temporary headquarters because it had a large cotton crop that could be used for fuel purposes. When he left Chattanooga, most of his troops moved into Cedartown and began living there permanently while they were maintaning their supplies and equipment at various other locations around Chattanooga. Cedartown is also where Drayson Hicks met Mrs Hillyer (the woman later known as Mrs Jackson) while she was working at her sister’s farm during Reconstruction days; he married her shortly afterwards on December 1st, 1868 at the courthouse steps in downtown Cedarville when onlyAfrican Americans could marry free within those years due to state laws then still under construction
